I have an obsession. It is with the changes at San Onofre Beach.

I am still in a bit of shock, which is somewhat helpful for my painting process.

I had started back when there was more beach.

Inside art stuff:

I had been painting San Onofre with the theme of my frustration over the loss of the palm trees that had stood there for as long as I have known that beach. Beaches change of course, but I felt exasperated by the loss of these trees. This loss, from nothing more than simple bureaucratic mismanagement of the State Park system.

In this composition I wanted to feature a tree that is no longer in the scene, by showing the exposed dead roots of that fallen tree. A personal homage to a tree that once provided a play area for my boys, a back rest, and shade. I took the unusual approach in this painting to design in, a “speed bump”. A speed bump is a visual element in the foreground of a composition that requires the viewer to “go around” or to “go over” the element. They are to be, in general, avoided, for they slow down the visual and the viewer’s experience.

Somehow painting this piece became Art Therapy for me. Capturing this kid's moment of reassesment, brought ME a conclusion to my need to paint the missing Palm Trees.

I didn't see that coming.
